Shooting Movements @ Clwb Ifor Bach

I did not plan to write a blog post about this show, however I feel it is important to document the first floor show I have shot. I brought tickets to see Movements a while ago, however in the spare of the moment the day before the gig I asked the drummer if I could receive a photo pass for the show and fortunately he said yes. The venue was in Clwb Ifor Bach in Cardiff, it wasn’t sold out, but I found it difficult to move around the venue when the bands were playing.

How the technology side of photography will advance in five years

In my first year of university, I was required to give a Pecha Kucha to my class and course leader. These types of presentation consist of a PowerPoint playing 20 slides for 20 seconds each amounting to a 6 minute 40 second presentation. I was given free choice on what this said presentation was about, however for my benefit, I wanted to pick a topic that interests me. I went with the tittle ‘how the technological side of photography will advance in the future’. With this, I had to complete extensive research on current and next generations of camera bodies, lens and drones.

Shooting The Wombats @ Ally Pally

With the realise of their 4th studio album, The Wombats took to the famous stage of Alexandra Palace on March 27th 2018. I was invited along by their first support act Bloxx, who I have shot many times before, this being their biggest show to date. However this was also my biggest show, I felt very out of my depth and small compared to everyone else around me. I have never had to be escorted to the photo pit before, and because fans were being crushed at the barrier, I was also asked to leave before the third song had finished. The whole event still feels quitter surreal, I do not think I will shoot Ally Pally again for a long time, but I look forward to when I do.

Year One / Unit Three

When I first learnt that our third unit would be Fashion, I was not looking forward to it at all. I knew I wouldn’t enjoy it, as fashion isn’t something I’m interested in. However, I tried to go into the unit with a positive mind set and determination to produce a body of work I was proud of. I looked into why and where people wear band merch, and I concluded that its actually everywhere. I was told I should go to concerts, however that defeats the purpose of my research. I found that wear band merch are almost marginalised, being called vampires and goths, however I was happy to continue this unit to show those that listening to heavy rock and wearing all black does not mean you are depressed or emo.

Casey - Bruise / single review

With the excitement building to their second album “Where I Go When I am Sleeping”, Casey have released their last single “Bruise” from the record. The song begins with a simple guitar melody, heavy with reverb and delay creating long echoes leading to powerful drums, “Bruise” is very reminiscent of Casey’s older songs like “Teeth” and “Darling”. The use of building dynamics as emotional lyrics flood in prove how much Casey are experimenting with their sound and make the listener feel connected to the impassioned story Tom Weaver is telling. Like many other songs in their discography, Weaver describes his thoughts of self-doubt, heartbreak and often referring to his mother as a sense of direction as he tries to comprehend his everyday problems.

Year One / Unit Two

For my second project at University, I was set the unit “Environmental Portraiture”. We were given free choose as to which format to use and the people we choose to shoot. I have not done much portraiture in the past, so I was willing to challenge myself to produce a body of work I was proud of. I first wanted to do this project about homeless people and their portraits, however I found this would be too difficult and dangerous. Instead I went for people who worked in local shops and taking their photo in their work space. This while unit really boosted my confidence as a photographer; I can now go up to people and ask if I can take their photo and explain why. I would like to do more planned shoots in the future, I would have to pick a location first, or perhaps walk around with them to find interesting location.

Paris 2017

From Wednesday the 8th to Saturday 11th of November I stayed in Paris to visit exhibitions and mainly attend Paris Photo. While there, I had time to travel around the streets of Paris and see the famous sights of the city. Every day was very long as I was up or at least 15 hours of the day, in total I took over 600 photos on my 5 day trip. The most famous places I went to were the Eiffel tower, Arc De Triomphe, and the Louvre, although I did explore the back streets and small restaurants that France had to offer. On the Thursday I had a ticket to visit Paris photo where over 200 photographers displayed and sold their work.

Year One / Unit One

For my first unit at Bath Spa, I was set the project “Object and Space”. I was also set to only use a 35mm camera, which I hadn’t used in years. Learning how to use the darkroom was interesting, it was very similar to the one I used a few years ago. I chose to study a local train station with no barriers and only two platforms. Trains arrived every 5-10 minutes, so I had plenty of subjects to focus on. We were told to only shoot in one place, so after a few shoots, we had to try and think of unique ways of shooting to not repeat our previous work. For our deadline on the 17th of November, I had to have my sketch book of research, thoughts and photographs, notes of the darkroom process, and three final prints.
