For the last three years, I have been learning to write in strictly academic circumstances, now with my dissertation handed in, I attended a master class with Colin Panthall to learn about the more relaxed type of writing. The main instances I would use this kind of type would be for social media posts, blog entries, tittles and competition entires. We covered a wide variety of subjects and also went over my project to see how I could use writing to help my images.
We first started with what we struggle with when writing about Photography. I said how I don’t feel I convey my passion surrounding the project when writing, I think this comes the very academic route we have been taught so far. Other peer awnsers were “how to sound interesting” and “getting the point across while being detailed, but not over doing it”. Its safe to say everyone struggles with writing, and its proven that creative types like my peers and I find it very difficult.
Colin Panthall gave us some really interesting examples, my person favourite was “I dreamt I killed my best friend”. The emotive language captures the reader, and the sense of danger makes them want more.
Below are some key points I will refer back to when writing for myself,
1st person is more touching, it coveys are more personal message and is generally easier to write on
3rd person can work in some cases, but sometimes looks like you have paid some to write for you
Avoid words like “examine, challenge, interrogate”
“Don't take boring photos. Don’t write boing words”
Get the passion in somewhere, you could go personal quest / journey (fits the subject)
Below are some points Colin made about my work
I don’t want me work to come up when searched for “GTA Screenshots”
He liked the quite momnets, people sat on a bench. Not the sci-fi narratives
Look into the history of the screenshot
